Drugs worth `1,814 cr seized THE MEGA FACTORY Our Staff Reporter BHOPAL In a joint operation of the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), mephedrone (MD) drug valued at Rs 1,814 crore and raw material were seized from a factory in Bagroda industrial estate near Bhopal. Two persons were arrested in this connection, the officials said on Sunday. A total of 907.09 kg of mephedrone, both in solid and liquid forms, was seized in the raid. The ATS in a statement stated that this is the largest illegal factory ever busted by the Gujarat ATS. The unit had a capacity to manufacture 25 kg of MD drug per day. A process was underway to manufacture a large amount of the contraband when the raid was carried out, it said. The arrested accused have been identified as Amit Chaturvedi, 57, and Sanyal Prakash Bane, 40. They were presented in the Bhopal Court and sent to police remand. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan termed the matter as a classic case where the residents of the village could not reconcile with the fact that a woman was elected to the office of the sarpanch. The top court observed that it was a case where villagers were unable to come to terms with the reality that a female sarpanch would make decisions on their be- half and that they would have to abide by her directions. "This scenario gets further exacerbated when we as a country are attempting to realise the progressive goal of gender parity and women empowerment across all spheres, including public offices and most importantly adequate women representative in elected bodies, such instances at the grass-root level cast a heavy shadow on any headway that we may have achieved," the bench observed in its September 27 order. 4Continued on | P6
