The Congress, in a sharp accusation, claimed that the Union government had deliberately insulted the "first Sikh Prime Minister of India" by not providing an appropriate location for his cremation, raising uncomfortable yet logical questions about how we honor those who have shaped India’s trajectory. According to a statement by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Singh’s final rites were to be held at New Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat, at 11:45 AM on Saturday, with full state honours. The Congress took this as a sign of disrespect, accusing the government of not finding a site for a memorial for the former prime minister—a man who not only served the country but also held an unparalleled record in global diplomacy and economic reform. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh voiced the party's outrage, tweeting that the people of India were left unable to fathom why the government could not allocate a location "befitting of his global stature." He described this lack of a memorial as “nothing but a deliberate insult.” In his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed Ramesh’s sentiments, calling for a space to be designated for a memorial. For the Congress, the call was not just about memorializing an individual but about honoring his legacy in a manner fitting the magnitude of his service to the nation. 4Continued on | P6
