Fitch cuts India's GDP growth forecast to 7% NEW DELHI: Fitch Ratings on Thursday slashed its projection of India's economic growth to 7% for current fiscal year, citing elevated inflation levels and higher interest rates. Fitch, which had in June projected India's GDP to grow by 7.8% in 2022-23, also forecast a slowdown in growth to 6.7% in FY24 from its earlier estimate of 7.4%. In its Global Economic Outlook Sept 2022, the rating agency said the GDP growth of 13.5% in April-June, as per official data, was below its June expectation of 18.5% (MONEY) increase. Girls worldwide lag behind boys in math: Unicef G irls worldwide are lagging behind boys mathematics, in with sexism and gender stereotypes among the root causes, according to a new report published by the Unicef. The report titled, 'Solving the equation: Helping girls and boys learn mathematics' features new data analyses covering more than 100 countries and territories. Published on Wednesday, the report finds that boys have up to 1.3 times the odds of obtaining mathematics skills than girls. Negative gender norms and stereotypes often held by teachers, parents, and peers regarding girls' in- nate inability to understand mathematics are contributing to the dispari. ty This also undermines girls' self-confidence, setting them up for failure, the re- port notes. An analysis of data from 34 low- and middle-income countries featured in the report shows that while girls lag behind boys, three-quarters of schoolchildren in class 4 are not obtaining foundational numeracy skills. Data from 79 middle- and high-income countries show more than a third of 15-year- old schoolchildren have yet to achieve minimum proficiency in mathematics. Household wealth is also a determining factor. The report notes that kids from the richest households have 1.8 times the odds of acquiring numeracy skills by the time they reach fourth grade than children from the poorest households. CONTD. ON P6 Release convicts who have undergone 10 yrs in jail but appeal not heard yet: SC The DELHI: NEW Supreme Court on Thursday said that convicts who have spent 10 years in jail, and their appeal has not yet been heard, should be granted bail unless there are any compelling reasons to deny this, while remission should be considered for those who have completed 14 years in prison. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and A.S. Oka said the court is of view that those persons who have completed 10 years of their sentence, and their appeal would not be heard soon, and if there are no extenuating circumstances, such prisoners should be enlarged on bail. Advocate Gaurav Agarwal, appointed as amicus curiae, informed the top court that affidavits were filed, as per its earlier orders to the six high courts to conduct the exercise of identifying life sentence convicts. Later, Congress MLAs trouped into the well of the House demanding discussion on security of MLAs and action against security men. In a counter move, BJP MLA Umakant Sharma along with others party MLAs too trouped into well raising slogan on security over heated exchange between Meda and Uma Kant Sharma in the House on Wednesday. On Thursday, tribal ConPanchilal MLA gress Meda demanded justice over the ill-treatment meted out to him the previous day. Meda claimed that he was stopped by policemen at the entrance of the state Assembly complex. He also claimed to have suffered injuries in his hand in the ensuing scuffle.
