BJP MPs K Laxman and Sambit Patra cited a report in the French media outlet 'Mediapart' to target Gandhi after the ruling party raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, which was adjourned amid noisy interventions by both sides. Patra claimed that billionaire investor George Soros and some US-based agencies, investigative media platform Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), and Gandhi occupy three sides of a "dangerous" triangle trying to destabilise India and stoke public disaffection for a regime change. "I have no hesitation in saying he (Gandhi) is a traitor of the highest order," he said. The verdicts, pronounced in last week of November, imposed fines and symbolic imprisonment on the accused, marking the conclusion of cases filed under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954 (PFA Act 1954). MILK ADULTERATION CASES Moti Lal, a milk vendor from Allunagar Diguriya, was penalized 42 years after being found guilty of selling milk with fat content below the permissible standard. On October 24, 1982, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) collected a sample of milk from him, which failed the fat content test. The court fined him 3,000 and sentenced him to remain in court custody until the court adjourned for the day. Similarly, Ram Lal, a milk vendor from Indiranagar, was found guilty of selling adulterated milk with 30% less fat. His sample was taken by the FSDA on June 22, 1988, at Wireless Square. The court imposed the same punishment on him as Moti Lal. In a third case, Keshav, the owner of a dairy in Semrapreetpur, Gosainganj, was also convicted for milk adulteration. A sample collected from his dairy revealed 22% less fat than the prescribed standard. He was fined Rs 3,000 and given a similar symbolic sentence. Reacting to the verdict, an FSDA official said, “This judgment, though delayed, reiterates the importance of food safety laws. Adulteration in essential commodities like milk affects the health of countless individuals, especially children.” SUGAR ADULTERATION CASE The court also resolved a 21-year-old case involving adulterated sugar. On September 8, 2003, FSDA officials collected a sample from the shop of Suresh Chandra Gupta, a resident of Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT). Tests revealed that the sucrose content was below the minimum standard, and excessive moisture was present. Gupta was found guilty and fined Rs 6,000. Like the milk vendors, he was also sentenced to remain in court custody until the court closed for the day. DECADES-LONG LEGAL DELAYS Advocate R.K. Sharma remarked, “It’s unfortunate that justice took decades, but the verdict reinforces the importance of strict food safety enforcement.” These judgments highlight the prolonged delays in resolving cases under the PFA Act. Experts and legal observers have pointed to the need for streamlining judicial processes to ensure timely verdicts in such cases. The FSDA, while welcoming the verdicts, emphasized the importance of robust monitoring to prevent food adulteration and protect public health. Opp sports ‘Modi Adani Ek Hai’ jackets In an unusual protest, leaders of several INDIA bloc parties wore black jackets with stickers reading "Modi Adani Ek Hai" and "Adani Safe Hai" on them and raised slogans on the Parliament premises to demand a joint parliamentary probe into the Adani issue. Referring to the 'Mediapart' report, Patra said the OCCRP has over 50 media partners across several continents and depends massively on Soros and "deep state" agencies in the US to fund its work. If they are getting 70 per cent of their resources from one source, then they cannot be neutral, the BJP leader said, adding that Gandhi has held press conferences to target the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government based on OCCRP's reports. 4Continued on | P6 French govt falls after losing vote of confidence IANS PARIS The deputies of the French National Assembly voted on Wednesday evening in favour of a no-confidence vote, forcing French Prime Minister Michel Barnier to resign and his government to collapse. According to the French Constitution, Barnier now needs to hand in his resignation to French President Emmanuel Macron. The resignation will be automatically considered as accepted. Speaking to the French lawmakers before the vote, Barnier defended his decision to force passage of the 2025 social security budget. "I made this decision after having demonstrated the spirit of listening, respect, and dialogue, which led the government to improve its text every day on several important points," he said. Pointing out that France is plunged into an enormous deficit, Barnier said: "This reality remains there, it will not disappear by the magic of a no-confidence vote." 4Continued on | P6
