According to Canadian officials, a senior Indian government official and an operative in the country's intelligence agency are implicated in the campaign. The officials claim that the violence has escalated in recent months, with threats against several individuals of Indian descent. The Canadian government has uncovered evidence suggesting Indian involvement in home invasions, drive-by shootings, arson, and at least one additional killing. One such incident involved the death of Sukhdool Singh, who was shot in Winnipeg shortly after being listed as a wanted individual by India's National Investigation Agency. 4Continued on | P6 fp Briefs BENGALURU Award for ISRO chairman ISRO said on Monday its chairman S Somanath has received the International Astronautical Federation's (IAF) prestigious World Space Award for Chandrayaan-3's remarkable achievement. Canada accuses Indian diplomats of “violent criminal activity’’ on its soil V Sudarshan In a tit-for-tat move, India on Monday expelled six Canadian diplomats, including its acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler, after Canada declared the Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and five other diplomats persona non grata for connections to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June this year. The Canadian diplomats have been given time till 11.59 pm, October 19, to leave the country. The Globe and Mail reported on Monday that Canada had expelled the Indian High Commissioner and five other diplomats over connection to “violent criminal activity in Canada” and that the national police force was set to reveal new details about the Indian government’s alleged involvement. The paper said that the Royal Cana- dian Mounted Police has evidence that the six diplomats were involved in the plot and that the Canadian government had presented the evidence to India last week. This evidence was to be made public later in the day. India has maintained that no evidence had been provided by Canada to back its claim and has stoutly denied the charges. Earlier on Monday New Delhi claimed that the diplomats were being “withdrawn” after the Canadian Charge d'Affaires in New Delhi was summoned by the Secretary (East) and told as much following a communication from Canada that Verma and other diplomats have been declared to be “persons of interest.” The term applies to someone who is wanted in a criminal investigation but who has not been formally arrested or questioned. 4Continued on | P6 Canada’s Acting High Commissioner to India Stewart Wheeler leaving the Ministry of External Affairs office. This is the highest level in nine months, according to data released by the government. The increase is mainly due to the high prices of vegetables, which have become more expensive because of poor weather conditions. Retail inflation is measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This index tracks the average change in prices that consumers pay for a basket of goods and services, like food and housing. The rise in September is significant, as the previous peak was 5.69% in December 2023. The cost of food, in particular, has increased sharply. The inflation rate for food items reached 9.24% in September, much higher than Augusts’ 5.66%. Vegetables saw the biggest jump, with prices increasing by around 36%.
