Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) will soon issue a tender in November for a waste-to-power plant, a groundbreaking initiative to process 300 tonnes of waste per day and generate 40 MW of power. This was shared by Indore Municipal Commissioner Shivam Verma, who spoke about the city’s future plans while serving as the Guest Editor of Free Press for Tuesday edition. “We are pushing to set up a waste-to-electricity plant to process 300 tons per day ENGROSSED IN JOB: IMC Commissioner Shivam Verma (TPD) of municipal waste, generating 40 megawatts of energy,” Verma said. He explained that the facility uses technology to convert organic waste into renewable energy, reducing landfill burden and minimizing environmental impact. In addition to waste management, the IMC is also planning to sell treated sewerage water for industrial use. “We plan to sell about 100 MLD of treated water from the Kabitkhedi plant to industries,” Verma said. Currently, treated water is used to irrigate public gardens and farmland, but industrial sales will offer another revenue stream and further environmental benefits, he added. Despite the city’s impressive track record, maintaining Indore's cleanliness presents ongoing challenges, believes the municipal commissioner. Verma noted that many garbage collection vans are in need of repair or replacement, but recent efforts have helped with the purchase of 140 new garbage trucks. Human resources are another concern, with over 800 workers retiring or leaving the workforce in the last three years without replacements. “We are working on addressing the shortage of manpower,” Verma said. Another pressing issue for the city is traffic management. Traffic of Indore is really chaotic. “When I was municipal commissioner in Gwalior, I would always reach places on time. Indore traffic has turned me into late comer,” he quipped. Verma explained that parking congestion is a major contributor to traffic problems, with cars parked on streets blocking the flow of vehicles. The IMC is working to identify underground spaces for parking and will deploy enforcement teams to guide drivers. Additionally, efforts are underway to redesign 17 major crossroads to enable free left-hand turns, although this requires coordination with multiple agencies, including metro and BRTS services. Indore is also addressing the issue of stray dogs. According to Verma, the city is sterilizing and vaccinating 80 dogs a day in an attempt to control the population. 4Continued on | P6
