Raid sirens wailed across Israel as dozens of missiles began raining down, with some exploding as they were intercepted by Tel Aviv's defence systems, in a yet another major escalation that leaves the Middle East on the brink of an all-out war. These ballistic missiles can reach their targets in just 12 minutes; drones or cruise fp take longer. No less than 400 missiles were fired, according to one account, the worst bombardment in Israel’s history. ‘‘I felt a large explosion near my home in Tel Aviv. The whole house was shaking,’’ said a resident. What sounded like celebratory gunfire could be heard breaking out across Beirut, western media reports said. Israel's airports authority said the country's airspace was closed and flights were being redirected to alternative destinations outside Israeli territory. Flashes of light from the interceptors could be seen in the sky over Tel Aviv. Distant explosions were also heard over Jerusalem. It was unclear where the booms were coming from. The Israeli military said that they had been warned in time about preparations for the attack by the US government. The U.S. embassy had even told its employees to be prepared to enter bomb shelters, the first such order in months. The Pentagon said in a statement “that the United States is well-postured to defend U.S. personnel, allies and partners in the face of threats from Iran and Iran-backed terrorist organizations.” Iran waded into the war a day after Israeli forces launched a rare ground invasion of southern Lebanon on Monday night. 4Continued on | P8 J&K POLLS Briefs ATLANTA Jimmy Carter turns 100 Jimmy Carter reached his 100th birthday Tuesday, the first time an American president has lived a full century and the latest milestone in a life that took the son of a Depressionera farmer to the White House and across the world as a Nobel Peace Prize-winning humanitarian and advocate for democracy. Temple, dargah on road must go, public safety paramount: SC 65% Final phase OBSERVATION Agencies Because somebody is an accused or convict can’t be ground for demolition of property NEW DELHI Public safety is paramount and any religious structure encroaching upon a road, water bodies, or rail tracks must go, the Supreme Court said today. The court stressed that India is a secular country and its directions for bulldozer action and anti-encroachment drives will be for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. The bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Viswanathan was hearing petitions challenging bulldozer action against people accused of crimes. The trend, which has caught on in several states, is often referred to as 'bulldozer justice'. The state authorities have, in the past, maintained that only illegal structures were demolished in such cases. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for three states -- Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Asked if being accused in a criminal case can be a ground for facing bulldozer action, Mehta replied, "No absolutely not, even for heinous crimes like rape or terrorism. Like my lord said it cannot also be that the notice issued is stuck one day before, it has to be in advance. One of the concerns was that notice has to be issued... most municipal laws, depending on the subject matter they are dealing with, have provisions for issuance of notice. Your Lordships may read that a notice be issued via registered post." "We are a secular country and our directions will be for all, irrespective of religion or community. Of course, for encroachment we have said... if it is on a public road, footpath, water body or railway line area, it has to go, public safety is paramount. If there is any religious structure in the middle of the road, be it gurudwara or dargah or temple, it cannot obstruct public," the court said. Experts say that a weapon cannot fire unless and until the trigger is pulled. “The hammer just won’t hit the bullet in the barrel unless the trigger is pulled,” an expert told the FPJ on condition of anonymity. According to reports, the incident occurred at 4.45am on Tuesday while the actor was readying to leave for the airport, to fly to Kolkata. Before leaving his apartment in Juhu he apparently checked his revolver and while placing it back in the cupboard it slipped from his hands, fell on the floor and a shot was accidentally fired, injuring him below the knee. Amid heavy blood loss, he was admitted to Criticare Hospital, Juhu, where the doctors removed a 9mm bullet from near his knee.
