She ran down the objectification of women by a few and said this behaviour ‘‘is deeply ingrained in such people" and ripped into the "deplorable mindset. In an exclusive signed article for PTI, the president further said she is “dismayed and horrified” at the series of crimes against women and criticised the "obnoxious collective amnesia" which allows women to be harassed, assaulted, and brutalised on a daily basis. Also, in a statement which political observers see as a pre-emptive strike aimed at thwarting any move to impose President’s rule, the chief minister said, ‘‘Remember, if Bengal burns, then Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn.” ‘‘We will rattle the chair in Delhi,’’ said Mamata, firing on all cylinders. The BJP response was predictable: It has intensified its clamour for her resignation stating that such “anti-national comments are not the utterances of someone holding a constitutional position”. Union minister and Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar has also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah stating that Mamata is threatening to unleash violence. “CM Mamata Banerjee, during her address to the Student Wing of TMC, shame- lessly incited the gathering by declaring that ‘I never sought revenge, but now, do what needs to be done.’ This is nothing less than a blatant endorsement of revenge politics from the highest office in the state,” the letter written by Majumdar states. Responding to Banerjee’s caution regarding the farreaching consequences of the unrest, beyond the geographical confines of the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don’t show us red eyes. Don’t even try to burn India with your politics of failure. It does not befit you to speak in a divisive language.” 4Continued on | P6 ALSO SAYS THEY WILL INTRODUCE CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR PERPETRATORS OF RAPE What about Hathras The ruling Trinamool Congress has criticised President Droupadi Murmu's comments on the RG Kar rape and murder case, questioning her silence on similar cases which happened in other states.
