Ambulances failed to reach the pregnant woman's house to take her to the nearest hospital or Primary Health Centre, or PHC. And, once her family somehow got her to the hospital, there were no doctors or nurses to help, leaving the woman and her unborn child to be delivered by a janitor. Unsurprisingly, the child did not survive; it died shortly after delivery. The sanitation worker has reportedly been fired. The shocking incident took place around 9 am Sunday in a village called Kharai in Shivpuri district. In a video widely shared online the sanitation worker admitted to attempting the delivery and that the child had died. She claimed there were no doctors or nurses in the hospital. Local media reports claim the doctor posted to the hospital was on leave for the day, while the nurse was "missing". The stampede took place at 11.30pm when devotees were climbing Barabar Hills stairs sculpted long ago to offer puja at the temple under Makhdumpur police station limits in the district. Police said the injured were rushed to the hospitals in Makhdumpur and Jehanabad. District magistrate Alankrita Pandey and SP Arvind Pratap Singh visited the spot and supervised the relief operation. Some devotees alleged the incident took place when some NCC volunteers deputed for crowd management resorted to lathicharge after a fight erupted involving a florist. There was a huge rush of devotees in view of the fourth ‘Somwari’ of the Sawan. Jehanabad sub-divisional officer Vikash Kumar denied that NCC volunteers used lathis to control the crowd. There are three routes to reach the temple. The DM contended the stampede took place when a group of devotees indulged in fisticuffs after heated arguments between them over some issue. Justice Subramonium Prasad issued notice to the Delhi Police as well as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on the anticipatory bail plea by Khedkar, and asked them to file their responses. "In the facts of the present case, the court is of the opinion that the petitioner be not arrested till the next date of hearing," Justice Prasad said, adding that Khedkar shall cooperate with the investigation. The court listed the case for further hearing on August 21. Khedkar allegedly misrepresented information in her application for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, 2022 to get reservation benefits. On July 31, the UPSC cancelled Khedkar's candidature and debarred her from future exams.
