INDIA DECLARES ONE-DAY MOURNING FP NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, TEHRAN India has declared a day s state mourning on Tuesday following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian. The Tricolour will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings and there will be no official entertainment on the day . It has been confirmed that 63-year-old Raisi, his foreign minister and seven others died in Sunday s helicopter crash in the mountainous region of the country s East Azerbaijan province. The crash is attributed to technical reasons and a high-level probe has been ordered. The sudden death of Iran s president may usher in a period of instability as he was tipped to suc- ceed the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, 85, who is in declining health. Raisi, 63, was especially favoured by the powerful Revolutionary Guards as a successor. The demise has also come at a time when Iran is facing internal dissent in some quarters, a weak economy, rampant corruption and simmering tensions with Israel, analysts told NYT. Still, they don t expect Iran s foreign or domestic policies to alter much. Iran s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, on Monday tasked Vice President Mohammad Mokhber to assume interim duties. Mojtaba, 55, Khamenei s son, was Raisi s main rival. The Iranian president s death may now make it easier for Mojtaba to succeed his fa- ther. The Iranian cabinet has appointed Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani as acting foreign minister; he is Iran s one-time top nuclear negotiator. Khamenei, in a message issued on Monday morning, expressed his great sadness over the deaths and offered condolences to people of his country. A five-day mourning has been ordered as well as a probe into the crash. Earlier today, Iranian state media IRNA shared drone footage shot by the Red Crescent showing the wreckage of the crashed helicopter. Raisi s death also threatens to complicate intermittent talks Iran has been holding with the United States on de-escalating the regional conflict and on the future of its nuclear program.
