MAHAVITARAN DUES: EX-IB STAFF CHEATED OF 7 LAKH AISHWARYA IYER / MUMBAI An elderly couple lost Rs7.35 lakh to cyber fraudsters who posed as officers from Mahavitaran and said the power supply would be disconnected if they did not pay their pending electricity bill immediately. Raghunath Karambelkar, 72, a resident of Mulund, received a text message saying the electricity supply would be disconnected by night as the previous bill was unpaid. The text message also mentioned the contact number of an officer from Mahavitaran or the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB), he said. Karambelkar, who had retired as a section officer of the Intelligence Bureau, dialled the number and told the “offi- cer” at the other end of the line that the previous bill had already been paid. However, the “officer” said the payment was not reflected in their database. The “officer” then sent a link to Karambelkar’s WhatsApp number and asked the latter to open it by clicking. “The link did not work on my mobile. I then forwarded the link to my wife, Manisha’s number and opened it. ‘The officer’ asked me to fill in details such as customer ID number and name and to make a payment of Rs5. I did. Immediately messages popped up saying that fixed deposit accounts of Rs5 lakh and Rs2 lakh were closed and a transaction of Rs34,000 was made from the savings account,” Karambelkar told the police.
