ON P9 Recast poll bond scheme: SC to EC ONLINE REPORT / NEW DELHI The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to produce before it in sealed cover the “up to date” data of funds received by political parties through electoral bonds till September 30, 2023. It said the exercise should be carried out within two weeks and data handed over to the registrar (judicial) of the apex court in a sealed cover. The court also suggested that an alternative scheme could be devised for political donations to weed out the “flaws” which afflict the bond system, reports Bar and Bench. CJI Chandrachud said that while the court would not suggest going back to cash-only system, serious deficiencies in the existing system should be addressed. “We do not want to go back to a cash only system. We are saying do it in a proportionate, tailor made system which overcomes the serious deficiencies of this electoral bond system,” the court said. CONTD. ON P9
