Two men with suspected IS links held near Kolkata AGENCIES KOLKATA The STF of Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested two persons with suspcted links to Islamic State (IS). The two men, identified as Mohammad Saddam and Syed Ahmed, were arrested from over the second Hooghly Bridge connecting Kolkata with Howrah. They were moving on a bike when STF officers chased and arrested them. The duo was presented before a lower court in Kolkata, which remanded them to STF custody till January 19. Confirming the arrests, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said that further investigation in . the matter is underway Sources in the city police said that one laptop and two mobile phones have been seized from their possession. "We had got a tip-off that Saddam and Ahmed were going to attend a secret meeting in the Khidirpur area. After arresting the duo, the police also conducted search operations at their residences and recovered some debit cards and electronic evidence from RNI No. mpeng/2010/35815 there. Some jihadi contents were also recovered from the laptop seized from them," a police officer said. He added that preliminary investigation has revealed that they were engaged mainly in brainwashing youths to join IS and also arrange for funds to spread their network in the state. Tiger kills woman in Sanjay Tiger Reserve, Sidhi OUR STAFF REPORTER city.bhopal@fpj.co.in A tiger killed a woman when she was picking firewood in core area of Sanjay Tiger Reserve in Sidhi on Saturday noon. Angry over the incident, local villagers staged a protest. Meanwhile, the authorities have started process to provide compensation to the family of the deceased. A senior officer of Sanjay Tiger Reserve told Free Press that the victim was identified as Guddi Bai Gotia (45). She was a resident of Badkadol village situated in the buffer zone of the Tiger Reserve. This officer claimed that villagers were warned several times not to go inside the jungle to collect firewood or other jungle produce. In the meantime, it's learnt that the woman was an exsarpanch. She along with others went inside the jungle to collect the firewood. She died within 25 minutes of the attack. The angry villagers said that it was on December 14 that a tiger had attacked a village woman, Omkali Singh, leaving her seriously injured. Notwithstanding this, the Tiger Reserve administration has taken no steps for the security of villagers. As the villagers were protesting, the local police reached the spot to control the situation. The government has claimed that in the past 18 years, a sum of Rs 3.74 lakh crore has been invested and it has generated jobs for 5.25 lakh people. The Congress has been asking the government to tell people about the investments made in the state in the past 18 years. Although the Congress has been alleging that there has been no investment in the state, the government has provided all the information about it. From 2004 to 2022, a sum of Rs 2.22 lakh crore has been invested in the state and 2.91 lakh people have been given jobs, which was besides the investments made during the 18 sum- mits. In the investors' summit in 2007, an amount of 17, 311 crore was invested. More than 50,000 people have got jobs because of the investment. Nearly 25,000 people were given employment because of the investors' summit in 2010 when a sum of Rs 26, 879 crore was invested. The summit held in 2012 brought investments worth Rs 26,000 crore and generated 31,000 jobs. Similarly, in 2014, a sum of Rs 49,272 crore was invested creating 38,000 jobs. In the same way, the summit held in 2016 brought an investment of Rs 32,597 crore, which created jobs for 92,000 people. Former chief minister Kamal Nath and former minister Jitu Patwari claimed that the government had failed to bring investments during the investors' summits. The government has, however, put up all the facts before the opposition in connection with investments. Shivraj Singh CM Chouhan said there would more investments this time. The non-resident Indians taking part in the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan will invest in the state, he said, adding that foreign investments will grow. CONTD. India beat Lanka by 91 runs. AGENCIES Patna The first phase of the castebased survey in Bihar has started. The caste-based headcount will be conducted across all 38 districts in two stages. In the first phase, which will be over by January 21, the number of all households in the state will be counted. The second phase of the , survey which is likely to be held from April 1 to April 30, will collect data pertaining to people of all castes, subcastes, socio-economic conditions, etc. The decision of a caste census was taken by the Bihar cabinet on June 2 last year, months after the Centre ruled out such an exercise in the Census. The survey would cover an estimated population of 12.70 crores in an estimated 2.58 crore households in 38 districts, which have 534 blocks and 261 urban local bodies. The survey would be com- Phase-II of survey, to be held from April 1 to 30, will collect data pertaining to people of all castes, subcastes, socio-economic conditions, etc pleted by May 31, 2023. Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav said that the enumeration exercise will give enable the government to scientifically carry out development work in the state for the benefit of the poor. Yadav also hit out at the BJP for its "anti-poor" policies and said the opposition party did not want the survey to be conducted. Earlier on Friday, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said that the government has trained officials to carry out the caste-based census taking into consideration the sub-castes in the state and the financial status of the citizens. He also stated that the census will be beneficial for the development of the . state and the country "We have trained our officers to conduct a detailed caste census. This will benefit the development of the state and also the country," Kumar told agencies during his 'Samadhan Yatra' in Sheohar district. A court here on Saturday granted bail to Ankush Khanna who allegedly shielded the accused involved in the Kanjhawala accident case. Metropolitan Magistrate Sanya Dalal granted the relief to Khanna, who had surrendered on Friday, after observing that the charges against him were bailable. The judge noted that according to the Investigating Officer (IO), Khanna had in his statement to the police said that accused Deepak was driving the vehicle. However, according to the investigation conducted so far, it has been found that accused Amit was driving. The court also noted the investigation officer's submission that Ankush Khanna along with another accused Ashutosh had assisted the co-accused in hiding them at Deepak's residence. "...Offences alleged are bailable in nature. Hence accused is granted bail on furnishing personal bond of Rs 20,000 along with one surety of like amount," the judge said. The court asked the accused to join the investigation as and when required by the IO, attend the trial and not tamper with evidence.During the proceedings, the prosecution sought 14 days of judicial custody of the accused.
