Most embarrassing for the Modi government and the ruling BJP is a remark by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the United States that the killing of the farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri of Uttar Pradesh con"absolutely was demnable." Her remark came as a surprise in the BJP circles here, since no minister or any BJP leader has spoken a word against the killing of the four farmers by the speeding vehicles on October 3. Sitharaman either did not know how the killings are being dealt with at home or she deemed the foreign audiences to be ignorant and not well informed, when she was asked about it by the staff and students of Harvard Kennedy School in Boston. On an official visit to the United States, she was asked on Tuesday during a conversation in the Harvard Kennedy School why there is no word from the prime minister or any senthe on minister ior killings; also, why there is a "defensive reaction," when somebody asks questions about such things. "No, absolutely not... It's nice of you to have picked up that one incident which is absolutely condemnable, every one of us says that. Equally there are instances happening elsewhere, is my concern," she replied. She went on to elaborate that there are issues of such nature happening in other parts of India which should be raised "when 51, :-87:<; 7. <076/716/ +7)4 ;07:<)/- 16 <0- +7=6<:A 16;1;<16/ <0)< 6,1) 1; ) 87?-: ;=:84=; *;74=<+7=6<:A *);-4-;; #0-:- 1; 67 ;07:<)/- 7. )6A<016/ 6 .)+< 1. :-+)44 <0- 7?-: 161;<-: ; ;<)<-5-6< ->-:A 87?-: 8:7,=+16/ 16;<)44)<176 0); <0- 6-@< .7=: ,)A; ;<7+3 )*;74=<-4A )>)14)*4- ?1<016 <0-1: 7?6 8:-51;-; )6, <0- ;=884A +0)16 0); 67< *:73-6 )< )< ):>):, )44 -66-,A "+0774 ' ! ! Partisan repartee on Savarkar, none the wiser Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's claim that the RSS icon Veer Savarkar filed a mercy petition on the advice of Mahatma Gandhi elicited some mirth on social media, even as others pointed out that the ‘Hindu nationalist’ has been much demonised, often without rhyme or reason. The ‘old school’ raised questions about how Gandhi could have advised Savarkar in 1911 as he had returned to India from South Africa only in 1915. Those in the BJP, however, sought to buttress Singh's claim. Singh was speaking at the launch of a book — Veer Savarkar: The Man Who Could Have Prevented Partition — authored by Uday Mahurkar and Chirayu Pandit at a function on Tuesday, where RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat also spoke. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, too, joined the debate, asking how Gandhi could have communicated with a jailed Savarkar. “Where was Mahatma Gandhi and where was Savarkar at that time? Savarkar was in jail. How could they have communicated,” he said. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi shared on Twitter a letter written by Gandhi on Jan 25,1920, to Savarkar’s brother regarding the case and accused Singh of giving a "twist" to what the father of nation wrote. is Singhji "Rajnath amongst the few sober and dignified voices in Modi Sarkar. But he doesn't seem to be free of the RSS habit . of rewriting history He has given a twist to what Gandhi wrote on Jan 25, 1920. Here is that letter to brother," Savarkar’s Ramesh said on Twitter while sharing the letter (See inset). "Rajnath Singh has clearly blown Gandhi's letter of Jan 25, 1920, out of context. Not surprising. This is par for the course for the BJP/RSS," he said in another tweet. #
