Quality at Value RAFALE: FRENCH TURBULENCE ASANSOL DY MAYOR IN DOCK FOR ‘JAB JOB' FRENCH JUDGE TO PROBE DEAL BETWEEN At a time when the saffron camp is holding Trinamool Congress responsible for the fake jab scam in Kolkata, TMC once again walked into another controversy on Saturday. (Pg 7) AFP / Paris In a development that will reverberate in India’s power corridors, a French judge has been asked to head a judicial investigation into ‘corruption’ suspicions in the 7.8 billion Euro The PNF had initially refused to investigate the sale, prompting French investigative website Mediapart to accuse it and the French Anti-corruption Agency of "burying" suspicions surrounding the September 2016 deal. In April, Mediapart claimed "millions of euros of hidden commissions" were given to a go-between who helped Dassault conclude the sale, of which "some... could have been given as bribes" to Indian officials. Dassault retorted that no wrong-doing was flagged in the group's audits. After the reports, France's Sherpa NGO, which specialises in financial crime, filed an official complaint for "corruption" and "influence peddling" among other accusations, prompting an investigating magistrate to be designated to probe the deal. Sherpa had already asked for an investigation into the deal in 2018, but the PNF took no action. In this first complaint, the NGO Grieve for your trees The court then ordered a temporary stay on felling of trees. However, during the final hearing on June 29, the HC vacated its stay, citing rule number 7A of the PIL that states a security deposit of Rs 60 crore, which is 0.5% of the entire project cost must be paid by the petitioner. The petitioners said that it was impossible for them to deposit such a large amount in court as they are only a group of morning walkers whose intention was to save the garden. Dr. Nilesh Baxi, one of the petitioners and founder of SIGNATURE, said the BMC started felling trees inside and outside the garden on Friday. “Exotic trees like royal palms have been cut. The trees could have been easily transplanted elsewhere, but they have been chopped down,” Baxi told FPJ on Saturday. He said that local residents had earlier proposed that instead of cutting the trees, the BMC could take over the Signature Garden in the adjoining plot that has only 45 trees. This, too, would have served the purpose. “The signature garden was built by citizens. We are ready to hand it over to the BMC as we are not against the project. However, all our proposals have fallen on deaf ears,” said Baxi. Meanwhile, environmentalists will hold a grieving meeting on Sunday. Activist Zoru Bhathena said the BMC should have considered the alternative proposed by the residents. “In the name of development, all major green cover of the city is being lost. No one is against the project, which is why we are proposing an alternative,” Bhathena said. Environmentalist and director of NGO Vanshakti, Stalin Dayanand, said cutting more trees will only lead to waterlogging in south Mumbai. had denounced the fact that Dassault chose Reliance Group as its Indian partner, a conglomerate headed by billionaire Anil Ambani, who is close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Dassult had initially won a contract in 2012 to supply 126 jets to India and had been negotiating with Indian aerospace company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). By March 2015, those talks had almost reached a conclusion, according to Dassault. But in April of that year, after Modi paid an official visit to France, the talks suddenly broke down to general surprise. CONTD. Several trees in and around the garden were felled on Friday in order to make way for the BMC’s ambitious coastal road project. Residents and activists are upset that tree cutting was resumed barely a day after the Bombay high court had vacated a stay that had restricted the BMC from felling any more trees in the area. As many as 140 trees in the 1.1 acre garden will be chopped for a traffic intersection arm of the coastal road. The BMC started felling trees here in May, following which residents and members of an NGO, Society For Improvement Greenery and Nature (SIGNATURE), filed a PIL in the Bombay high court, seeking a stay. OUR BUREAU New Delhi The spat over the creation of integrated theatre commands has come out in the open with Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat stating that the air arm of the military was supposed to play a supporting role for the other armed forces. In response, the Indian Air Force refused to be drawn into a media debate on the matter but its chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria clarified that the IAF was in support of the creation of theatre commands, but it should be done in the right way . He also disagreed with the CDS remarks comparing the IAF with combat support arms of the Army like Engi- neers and Artillery and stated that the IAF had a bigger air power role. The CDS is working towards the creation of four theatre commands of which three will be headed by Army officers and one by a Navy officer. All the theatre commanders would report to the CDS as per the proposals which are yet to be approved by the Defence Minister and the government. The verbal spat happened during a seminar held by the Global Counter-Terrorism Council where the CDS said: "The Air Force is required to provide support to ground forces. ON P6 NICHOLA MARIE Gone are the days when dumped Bollywood wives would pour out their broken hearts and bitter bile to the glossies. That name-calling and finger-pointing is a thing of the past. Now, we have the to-be-divorced couple decorously sharing a joint statement about their mutual decision to amicably part ways, how they will continue to be devoted parents to their offspring, etc. In recent times, divorced couples like Adhuna and Farhan Akhtar, Mehr and Arjun Rampal, and Malaika and Arbaaz Khan, have shown us how it’s done. Of course, much will be read between the lines of the shocking missive from Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan… Was his alleged dalliance with an actress 27 years his junior, the real reason for the split? Did the wife simply refuse to look the other way just so she could continue to enjoy the perks of being Mrs. Khan? Did love simply die? Is marriage supposed to be about ‘love’, anyway? Reacting to the news, Upper Crust Editor Farzana Contractor, aptly wrote, “Who knows why two people fall in love or out. It’s all about happiness; when that too, given the barrage of scrutiny and conjecture it naturally places them under. In India, with the divorce rate at less than 1%, simply staying together because “log kya kahenge?” is often the easier option. In Rao-Khan’s case “15 beautiful years together” did not automatically translate into a marriage that lasts a lifetime. We are assured, “Sensual pleasures have the fleeting brilliance of a comet; a happy marriage has the tranquillity of a lovely sunset’? (Thank you, Ann Landers). Unfortunately tranquillity is not for , everyone, is it? Just yesterday actress Kirti , Kulhari, who had announced her separation from husband Saahil Sehgal earlier this year, declared, “I have under- stood that I am not someone who is probably made for marriage.” She added that she was open to the idea of falling in love, and would be in a relationship again. This appears to be the current motto: the pursuit of personal happiness. We do not see the likes of Arjun Rampal, Farhan Akhtar and Arbaaz Khan rushing to enter into wedlock, though all the three aforementioned gentlemen are in delirious relationships with young new loves, and Rampal even has an adorable new tot to further brighten his life. FPJ NEWS SERVICE / Pune Shocking footage surfaced on Saturday morning that showed a Hyundai hatchback, carrying a family of three, pulverised, as it got caught between two trucks, and later burst into flames. All three passengers, including a 4-year-old child, died on the spot. According to preliminary reports, it all happened when a container truck lost control, the visuals of which were captured by the rear camera of another truck that was in front of the Hyundai. The driver of the car suffered grievous injuries and was hospitalised. The man who was driving the container, which turned turtle, was rescued by the patrol team of the Highway Police and hospitalised. According to a media report, the deceased — Joaquim Chettiar, 36; his wife Luiza, 35; and their son Jazial — were returning home to Naigaon near Vasai from Pune. The country accounts for the highest number of such incidents -- 4.5 lakh -- globally every year, with more than 4.5 lakh people being crippled and resulting in losses accounting up to 3.14% of the GDP the , World Bank said in a report released earlier this year.
