CBI PROBE: Maha govt, Anil Deshmukh move SC against HC order Maharashtra government and its former home minister Anil Deshmukh moved the Supreme Court on Tuesday challenging the Bombay High Court order directing a CBI probe against him and raised questions over the integrity of the central probe agency and impact on the country's federal structure. Maharashtra questioned the procedure adopted by the high court saying that the state was heard on the question of maintainability of the pleas seeking CBI investigation against Deshmukh on the allegation of corruption, and the order too was reserved on that issue, but the court finally ended up directing the probe. After the high court order on Monday, Deshmukh, a veteran politician from Vidarbha, resigned from the state government. In his appeal, Deshmukh said the high court order raises issues of seminal importance which "impact not just the federal struc, ture of the country impact on our polity, but also the manner in which, and the institutions through which investigations are to be conducted". He said the order also raises questions on whether the ex-parte procedure adopted by the high court, has the potential of stigmatising reputation without first ascertaining the point of view of those against whom the allegations are made. "Last but not the least, is the interpretation of a High Court of its extensive 74% POLLING IN KERALA, OVER 63% IN TAMIL NADU powers under article 226 of the Constitution in terms of which the entire state machinery has been supplanted as if no investigation in the state can ever serve the cause of justice, and that an agency of the government Central wherein its directors reputation in the past have not been above board, have now been charged with a responsibility of conducting a preliminary en..," quiry the plea said. He said that without lodging an FIR, the court could have directed that an application be filed before the magistrate for investigation under section 156(3) of CrPC. "The fact that the court did not direct the petitioners before the court to follow this procedure suggests that the court believed that entire state machinery was untrustworthy; that no investigation could have been made within the state by a state inves, tigating agency and reposed faith in an outside agency by referring to it as an "independent investigating agency" knowing fully well that its credentials in the past are not such that the court can repose absolute faith in such an agency", Deshmukh said in his plea. # BJP demands EC inquiry after EVMs found in TMC candidate's house 79% cast votes in Assam, 77% in WB A high voter turnout was recorded in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry assembly elections on Tuesday, with the Congress along with its allies like the DMK locked in a keen contest to regain turf in South India. Shocked? You certainly may have been. This surprising gender gap in Covid-19 infection cases has come to the fore in a study conducted by Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya scientists. According to the study, females are lesser prone to Covid-19 than males. Besides, mortality rate in females due to Covid-19 is three times lesser? ?than ?that of males. This variation in the risk of infections/deaths coronavirus has been attributed to the different hormones found in women and men according to their gender. The findings of the research team from School of Biotechnology at DAVV has been published in the well-known American journal Current Cancer Drug Targets. The journal publishes worldwide research and reviews related to medical chemistry, pharmacolo, gy genomics, proprietary biology and especially cancer. Dr Hamendra Singh, head of the research team, along with IIT Indore faculty member Hem Chandra Jha, researchers Aakruti Nayak, Shivani Bhagwat and Rajesh Sharma reviewed more than 250 research studies worldwide before reaching the above-mentioned conclusion. Parmar's lab has been doing research on cancer and other subjects for the past many years. According to Dr Parmar, Global Health 50/50, which works against gender discrimination in the health sector and collects statistics, has released coronavirus figures from 50 countries till November last year. A closer look at data revealed ?that ?the number of men contracting Covid-19 was far more than women. Not only this, in the case of death too, the number of men is almost three times more than women. Amid Covid-19 pandemic, much emphasis was initially placed on the elderly or those who have comorbidities such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes and cancers as being at high risk of contracting and/or dying of Covid-19. “A comparison and study of data from 250 major research studies worldwide showed that oestrogen found in women and testosterone in men are playing different roles in the effects of coronavirus infection. The female hormone oestrogen is reducing the risk of coronavirus infection ,” and its severity Parmar said. #
