ED OPPOSES GUPTA’S BAIL PLEA IN VVIP CHOPPER SCAM & SAYS... ‘Not only Mallya & NiMo, 36 other bizmen too have fled’ AGENCIES New Delhi The ED on Monday opposed the bail plea of Sushen Mohan Gupta, alleged defence agent arrested in the AgustaWestland VVIP choppers scam, saying there was a likelihood of him fleeing the country like 36 businessmen who had criminal cases against them. The Enforcement Directorate told special judge Arvind Kumar that 36 businessmen, including Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi, have fled from the country in the recent past. The probe agency's special public prosecutors D P Singh and N K Matta countered Sushen's claim that he had deep roots in the society, saying, "Mallya, Lalit Modi, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and Sandesara brothers (Sterling Biotech Ltd promoters) had deeper routes in the society yet they left the country There . are such 36 businessmen who fled from the country in the last few years." During the argument, ED's advocate Samvedna Verma told the court that the probe was at a crucial stage and the agency was trying to find out who was "RG" referred in the diaries of Sushen. Verma also accused Gupta of influencing the witnesses in the case and told the court that he also tried to destroy the evidence in the case. Chowkidar rant gets Rahul into trouble with SC FP NEWS SERVICE New Delhi Congress President Rahul Gandhi has earned the ire of the Supreme Court for suggesting that the Apex Court had vouched his oft-repeated assertion of "Chowkidar chor hai." Seeking his reply by April 22, the Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna fixed the next hearing on April 23. The court was responding to a contempt petition filed by New Delhi BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi. After the Supreme Court had allowed the submission of leaked Rafale documents, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had claimed a moral victory and said the court has made it clear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has "committed theft". Lekhi has contended that Rahul had projected his personal statement as the Supreme Court's order to create prejudice. Referring to Rahul’s utterances over admissibility of documents in the Rafale case, the bench, in its order, reportedly said that the court "had no occasion to record any such views or make any such observations and what was decided by the court was the legal admissibility of certain document to which objections were raised". OBJECTION TO CONG FLAG the All India Bar Association Meanwhile, haschairman Adish C Aggarwala petitioned the EC to stop the Congress from using its flag, which is similar to the Tricolour. He said the symbol allotted to the Congress is only a hand and not the National Flag; moreover, the Representation of the People’s Act specifically prohibits use of the national symbols. "When the election symbol of the Congress is seen in the backdrop of the Tricolour, a common man is confused as he identifies the political party with freedom, patriotism, honour, cohesion and adoration of his country," the petition said. It further said: "The party flag of Congress uses a hand instead of the Ashok Chakra. The use of colours and their placement is exactly the same as that of the National Flag. Therefore, there is no substantial difference for the common man who primarily identifies with the Tricolour....The Congress party, by using its own Tricolour deceptively, brings disrepute to the National Flag."
