Presiding over an RSS event, he warned that any attempt to define India through "religion, dogma or intolerance" will only dilute the national identity Also, he warned . against narrow and parochial definitions of nationhood -- such as religion and region. As RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat played the benign host, the former president dwelt on the difference between the concept of "utopian nationstate" and Indian nationalism -- which he said emanates from "universalism". He also underscore that ‘‘our national identity has emerged from a long-drawn process of confluence, assimilation and co-existence," Mukherjee said in Nagpur. It is this multiplicity "in culture, faith and language" that makes India special, he said. "We derive our strength from tolerance. We accept and respect our pluralism. We celebrate our diversity . They have been a part of our collective consciousness for centuries." Mukherjee did not once name the RSS but quoted from Nehru's 'Discovery of India': "I am convinced that nationalism can only come out of the ideological fusion of Hindu, Muslims, Sikhs and other groups in India." He had a message for the nation and the RSS: "We must free our public discourse from all kinds of fear and violence." Before the former president spoke, Bhagwat said the debate over Mukherjee's decision to attend the RSS event was "meaningless" and no one is an outsider for his organisation. Speaking ahead of Mukherjee's speech, Bhagwat said Mukherjee will remain what he is and the Sangh will remain the Sangh, even after the event. Bhagwat also said his organisation wants to unify the entire society and no one was an outsider. People may have different views but they are all children of mother India, he said. Mukherjee's decision to preside over the RSS event has already triggered a major political slugfest with several Congress leaders criticising his decision. Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel expressed his disapproval in a tweet and said he did not expect this from him. Commuters hit after rain disrupts travel by rail & road Traffic thrown out of gear fPJ BUREaU Mumbai Heavy rain lashed Mumbai on Thursday, disrupting local train services on Central and Harbour lines and causing waterlogging in low-lying areas. Commuting was a misery as it rained for nearly three hours and resulted in massive traffic snarls. The city recorded 27mm of rainfall while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 12mm and 21mm, respectively.Officegoers suffered as Central and Harbour line services were delayed by 20 minutes. However, the Western Railway’s suburban services remained unaffected. Railway tracks were flooded at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Wadala, Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar, Sion and Kurla, leading to the hiccups in services. In the evening rush hour, a SPAD (signal passed at danger) incident was reported at Wadala station.Commuters voiced their dissatisfaction at the unpreparedness of the railways. “We have seen waterlogging on tracks and disruption of train services in the first few showers. What will authorities do when it rains heavily?” demanded commuter Rajesh Khillari. CONTD. ON P6 FACT FILE Colaba recorded 27.06mm and Santacruz 37.08mm of rainfall. CONSTITUTIONAL PATRIOTISM From our Constitution flows our nationalism. The construct of Indian nationalism is constitutional patriotism Steering clear of RSS rituals "The Sangh is the Sangh and Dr Pranab Mukherjee is and will remain Dr Pranab Mukherjee" fPJ NEWS SERViCE Nagpur Former president Pranab Mukherjee refused to be drawn into the RSS rituals. Flanked by men in khaki, he stood up for the RSS prayer, but refused to join in the incantation – not even token mutterings. He also refused to take the customary RSS salute, unlike all others on the stage. He stood with a slight hunch, as if cringing under the unsavoury controversy that had preceded his visit. But Pranab went through the motions of accepting a bouquet from RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who took him on a guided tour of the complex that includes a memorial for KB Hegdewar, the founder of the Sangh. He was also more than forthcoming when he scribbled in the visitor's book at the memorial: ‘‘Today I came here to pay my respect and homage to a great son of Mother India." By that profound statement hangs a tale. Mukherjee, 82, later watched a drill by RSS trainees, telecast live on TV and in the WATERLOGGED AREAS Dadar, Hindmata, Parel, Worli, Vikhroli, Kurla and Chembur, Milan Subway, Malad, Bandra, Jogeshwari, Marol and Kandivali. public domain perhaps for the first time in its nearly century-old history . There was usual burstthe ing of crackers, spraying of BJP president Amit Shah has failed to dissuade the Shiv Sena from going solo in future elections. He failed to placate one of the oldest allies of the BJP even after a , marathon two-hour bridgebuilding meeting. Sena MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut gave an indication of which way the wind is blowing. "The decision to contest all elections solo in future was taken by the party's National Executive… How can any outsider come and influence it?" He also went out of the way to scotch the speculation that the two saffron allies will join hands not only for the Lok Sabha but also the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Asked about details of the two-hour-long deliberations between Shah and Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday night, the Sena leader gave a cryptic response, "The two leaders met in a closed room. A third person cannot possibly know what discussions took place." Uddhav Thackeray clarified the party's stand at his public meeting later in the day in Palghar, where the tone was one of defiance. He referred to the meet as a ‘drama’ and threw the challenge at the BJP by declaring the vanquished candidate Srinivas Vanga as the party’s candidate in the Lok Sabha election. BJP had managed to win the Palghar seat by a slim margin of 29,572 votes and lost out on about six lakh votes because of crossvoting and Sena stepping in. BJP now faces a replay in the general elections, if Sena goes ahead with its threat. The BJP has also declared its candidates for the June 25 polls. The BJP apparently wants to keep the door ajar and plans to have two or three more such meetings. At least, the two warring allies have broken the ice, sources said. However, political observers are convinced that this time it is not about Sena angling for a larger share of the seats or about applying balm to Uddhav’s bruised ego. The jigsaw is expected to fall in place close to the general elections. Until then, the posturing and the sniping will continue. A lot will depend upon the BJP and what gestures it makes – politics is often more about symbolism and less about substance.
